ABOUT ALL ABOUT SKIN

The business was born in Haly Health & Skin Medical Centre in 2012 when Dr Isabelle Jonsson-Lear was looking for alternative treatments for sun damaged skin; instead of cutting, burning and freezing everything! From there, under the influence of Jackie, the business outgrew the two little rooms out the back of the clinic and more space was required.

All About Skin was born and DermDen rebranded with the new premises opening its doors on Monday 1st August 2022, bringing life back to the old Carroll’s Building in King Street.

The treatments provided at All About Skin aim to improve overall health and function in the skin. If your skin is working for you, naturally you will start to achieve improvements in the function of what it your largest organ and as a bonus reap the cosmetic benefits.

There are 3 simple steps to ensuring a healthy skin. These apply to all skin types.

1. pH Balanced Products
Your skin is more acidic and not alkaline. For this reason, products balanced to the skin should be used to ensure that it works to its optimum function. Using products that are not pH balanced to the skin can alter the pH of the skin. When the skin is not at a stable pH, our naturally occurring immunity cells are not able to work properly. Think of it as having a fever. If your body temperature is not achieved through thermoregulation then you will feel unwell. If you’re skin is not pH balanced then you will not reap the benefits of its natural reparation.

The topical application of skin products is generally required because our consumption of vitamins, minerals and water do not always reach the surface of our skin. Our internal organs take first what they need before sending the remainder to the skin.

2. Exfoliation
There are two types of exfoliation, manual and chemical. Manual exfoliation is the physical action of removing inactive skin cells with the aid of an abrasive agent such as exfoliating mits, gloves, loofah or exfoliating scrubs. Chemical exfoliation is the addition of enzymes or natural acids to aid in the breakdown of the glue holding the dead skin cells to the surface of the skin.

Ultimately, some form of manual exfoliation is always required to remove inactive skin cells and promote cell renewal. However, as we age, the glue between the skin cells known as Glycosaminoglycans (GAGS) becomes thicker and more difficult to break down from sun damage and environmental damage. In this instance, chemical exfoliation is required to boost the efficacy of exfoliation by breaking down the GAGS.
The method of exfoliation speeds up the cell renewal process to ensure you are consistently turning over ‘a new skin’ which in turns encourages a healthier surface for the skin to better protect itself.

3. Moisturising Sunscreen
Skin requires hydration to promote health and requires protection to reduce exposure to environmental and sun damage. A sunscreen is imperative to prevent further harmful UVA and UVB rays from reaching the skin but increasing the moisture content in the skin is just as important. The water content in your skin is essentially the highway for your cells. If your skin is dehydrated, your cells can’t travel and can’t work to their optimum function.
Your barrier function or acid mantle is the combination of oil and water which sits on the surface of your skin acting as a protective layer. When this protective barrier function is compromised from a lack of Essential Fatty Acids in our diet or from stripping products, we see skin conditions surface such as dry flaking skin, irritation, acne, eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis and much more.

Sun Damage & Skin Cancer

Australia has the world's highest skin cancer incidence rates.

Despite the evidence linking sun exposure to skin cancers, research shows that many Australians, particularly young people, are complacent about sun protection measures. Skin cancer is the most common cancer in Australia. Australians are four times more likely to develop a skin cancer than any other form of cancer.

Prevention remains the single most effective way to save lives. Given the high incidence and the impact of skin cancers (especially melanoma), a strong emphasis on prevention is needed to reduce unnecessary exposure to ultraviolet rays.

Skin cancer occurs when skin cells are damaged, for example, by overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun.
At All About Skin, our Skin Health Therapist is able to assess your skin damage and offer advice on how to reverse some of the damage, maintain a healthy skin and prevent further damage.

Repair the Past!
Over the years, we accumulate sun damage to our skin. 80% of this damage occurs before we turn 18 years old. Solar Damaged skin is more susceptible to cancers such as Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC), Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC) and Melanoma, to name the most common ones. Cancers of the head and neck are the most dangerous as they have the highest incidence of spreading to our glands and other body organs such as the liver, lungs and long bones. However, it's never too late to start looking after your skin and turn back the clock on some of the damage that has been done.

Protect the Present!
Recent skin health studies have shown that looking after your skin dramatically decreases your chance of getting skin cancers. The promotion of healthy skin cells allows them to identify the unhealthy cells and prevent them from growing further. As the body naturally ages the skin cell rejuvenation process slows down. With the use of chemical and manual exfoliation, we can help the regeneration of skin cells to promote natural rejuvenation.

The naked eye cannot always see the amount of damage to the skin which is why advanced technology such as a dermatoscope and a skin surface analyser allow experts to look under the layers of the epidermis into the dermis to accurately assess the damage.

Prevent the Future!
Continue to prevent skin damage by cleansing, exfoliating, repairing, protecting and monitoring. Looking after the biggest organ in our body should be one of our main priorities.
Regular skin checks will allow damaged areas and cancers to be picked up and managed accordingly. If you have never had a skin cancer before we recommend a skin check every year. Regular Slip! Slop! Slap! Seek! Slide! will always be an imperative measure in skin protection.

A regular skin maintenance regime is also imperative to keeping your skin healthy. Regular cleansing, exfoliating and SPF moisturising of the skin helps to keep the skin healthy, youthful and vibrant.
